A Franklin Township school bus driver who allegedly drove drunk with children aboard earlier this week wants a speedy trial.

A not-guilty plea was entered Friday on behalf of Phillip Leslie, 48, at an initial court appearance.

Leslie was charged with four counts, including felony neglect of a dependent and operating a vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration above 0.15 with a minor passenger in the vehicle. He was being held Friday on $75,000 bond.

Marion County Deputy Prosecutor Mario Masillamany said that Leslie would have to meet certain requirements if he posts bond.

"He would have to be placed on sentinel, which is an alcohol monitoring program, due to the fact of his high alcohol content of 0.22 and the danger he poses to the citizens of Marion County if he does bond out," Masillamany said.

Police said Leslie was slurring and staggering Wednesday when officers talked to him after he had completed his afternoon bus route. An empty liquor bottle was found in Leslie's car in the parking lot of Franklin Township Schools' transportation center, Indianapolis police said.

Students told police that Leslie had driven on the wrong side of the road, stopped at the same houses several times and struck at least one mailbox as he drove Kitley Intermediate School students home.

Leslie declined to talk to reporters as he was led into court. His driver's license was suspended Friday, and his jury trial was set for May 5.
