A 14-month-old girl was in grave condition Wednesday evening after the child and her mother were beaten by the woman's 18-year-old boyfriend, police said.

The 21-year-old woman and her baby were transported to St. Vincent Hospital by friends about 4:20 p.m., Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson told 6News' Rick Hightower.

The mother and child were severely beaten over two days in an apartment at 2105 Amerherst Dr. on Indianapolis' northwest side, Thompson said.

The woman's 18-year-old boyfriend, who is not the father of the child, was pointed out to police in the hospital waiting room, Thompson said. He was taken into custody for questioning.

The baby was being treated at the Peyton Manning Hospial For Children at St. Vincent for life-threatening injuries. The mother’s injuries were less serious and she was expected to be released Wednesday night.

The woman and baby had been living with the boyfriend and his two children, Thompson said. The couple had been dating about a month.
