An 18-year-old man was arrested early Thursday morning after his girlfriend and her 14-month-old daughter were taken to a hospital following a brutal beating that left the girl in extremely critical condition.

A friend brought Rachel Goodman, 21, and her toddler, Lillianna Goodman, to St. Vincent Hospital Wednesday afternoon.

Indianapolis police questioned and then arrested Goodman's boyfriend, Tayuan Chism, 18, on charges of neglect of a dependent, aggravated battery and domestic battery.

Police said Chism beat Lillianna for more than an hour because she wouldn't eat food and "for failure to show respect to Chism," Indianapolis police Sgt. Paul Thompson said.

The beating happened Wednesday afternoon in an apartment in the 2100 block of Amherst Drive, police said.

Rachel Goodman, who is also 14 weeks pregnant, was treated and released.

Police said there were at least two other adults and a juvenile who witnessed the beating. Some of Rachel Goodman's injuries were believed to be a result of her trying to get Chism to stop beating her daughter, police said.

A neighbor told 6News that he didn't know the family well, but could hear them fighting.

"Last night, I hear the guy fighting the woman," said Victor Garido. "I hear the baby still crying."

Police said Chism came to the hospital and told police he was the one they needed to talk to.
