'Pool Ladies' On Mission To Save Summer Hotspot

Group Raises Thousands Toward Pricey Goal

POSTED: 7:41 am EDT March 13, 2009

A group that dubbed itself the "pool ladies" and their children are battling the odds to keep a pool open this summer in spite of the city's plan to close it.

The Alexandria pool is in poor condition and is in need of repairs that could cost as much as $85,000, money the community doesn't have, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.

Organizers have raised about $16,000, still a mere crack in the total needed to fix leaks and cracks in the pool.

Costs were soaring, and the pool was a line item that council members could easily take out.

But the pool ladies weren't going to resign themselves to no summer fun.

"If you drive into this town, this is where all the fun is," said Vanessa Hosier.

The pool ladies are raising money from local businesses, churches, schools and parades. Last weekend, they marched through town chanting "save our pool."

Children are involved, too. Noah Dockrey, 11, has pitched in his fair share.

"I've been to middle school for a tutor and they have a bucket there and I put money in," Dockrey said.

If the pool ladies are able to raise $50,000, the city council will take care of the rest, Cornell reported. The money will need to be in hand by April 30.
