Community Outcry Keeps Drive-In Open

Facebook Campaign Helps Save Skyvue

A community outcry has kept an old-fashioned icon open for the summer, but the pressure is on to get it ready for opening night in less than three weeks.

When news started circulating that the Skyvue Drive-In might close, the community gathered a campaign on the social networking Web site Facebook to keep it open.

More than 1,300 people joined the group "Keep The Skyvue Drive In Open," posting wistful memories of the facility that new owner Doug Morgan thinks was built in the 1950s and has much of its original equipment.

The grassroots effort paid off, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported. The drive-in will open this summer under new management.

The drive-in, one of the last of its kind, sits just off Interstate 70, 38 miles east of Indianapolis.

"People were like, 'Oh, it's such a shame it may close,' so we decided to do something about it," Morgan said.

Morgan and his wife stepped in to save the drive-in, even though they'd never run one before.

"I came here when I was a kid. There's so many things with technology today that changed so fast," he said. "Some things you just want to kind of hold onto if you can and keep it going."

Movies will run on the original projector and on the original giant screen. Morgan said he'll make updates and repairs, but will keep the nostalgia. The concession stand will offer classic drive-in favorites.

Normal ticket prices will be $7 for adults and $3 for children, but on opening weekend, cars will be admitted free.

Morgan said he hopes the lot will stay packed all summer long, with families making new memories at a place that's been a part of childhood remembrances in Henry County for more than five decades.

"A lot of them say, 'I was there when I was a kid. I've taken my kids. I want to take my grandkids," Morgan said. "There's not very many of them left, so if this one closed, how many people would never get a chance to see one?"

Opening night is set for May 15. There will be an open house from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a DJ, a raffle and games for children.

Morgan said he isn't sure yet which two movies will be shown on the first free night. After that, he'll get new releases that are also shown at any theater.
