Wounded Officer Grateful To Be Back At Work

Fishburn To Work Limited Hours At Training Academy

An Indianapolis police officer who was shot in the line of duty last year said Wednesday he was happy to be back at work.

Officer Jason Fishburn was shot in the head in July 2008 as he pursued a man who was charged with murder in another case.

He returned to work on a very limited basis Monday at the police training academy.

"I'm very grateful and I'm glad to be back," Fishburn told reporters.

He is expected to work four hours a day, four days a week. Officials said it will take a while to determine what Fishburn's capabilities are, but said reintroducing him to a work environment is an important step in his rehabilitation.

While he won't be able to drive his squad car or shoot a gun, Fishburn said he's happy to be doing whatever he can to serve.

"Honor and duty … It's just a little different now," he said. "(I will) hopefully get to full function and get back to work."

Police chief Michael Speaks said there is no way to tell how close to a full recovery Fishburn might make, but said it was good to have him back in any capacity.

"Whether or not he'll return to full duty, I don't think any of us can say," he said. "But one thing I can say is he'll make every effort to and we, as a police department, will make every effort to help him in his recovery."
