INDIANAPOLIS -- City planners have asked for the public's help in looking for ways to capitalize on the strengths of a struggling west side corridor.Indianapolis' West 30th Street, from the White River to Lafayette Road, is close to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and has parks, river access and a greenways trail, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported. But neighborhood leaders say it also lacks an identity and is often considered a part of the city that's not safe.
"There's a lot families here, which is good. But it's not really a safe place to let your kids out and just play, like normal kids should do," said resident Martha Endicott.Planners have embarked on a search for ways to preserve the corridor's existing assets, while promoting growth and economic activity in the area.Patricia Willis, who walks to work along West 30th Street, said sidewalks should be a priority."Especially if the grass is wet, if it's raining like today, I have no where to walk but on the pavement, which is the street, which is dangerous," she said. The completed plan will serve as a guide for all future zoning and land-use decisions along the corridor.A meeting to get public input on the project will be held June 18 at 7 p.m. at Cardinal Ritter High School.
