INDIANAPOLIS -- Investment in new facial recognition technology at the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles is already yielding returns with the arrest of a man on fraud charges after he sought a seventh Indiana identity.BMV Commissioner Andy Miller disclosed the arrest of David Grice Tuesday at an identity theft and fraud symposium for law enforcement officers.He said Grice, once jailed in Illinois for forgery, had obtained six Indiana driver's licenses before the agency alerted its branches.
Within 48 hours, Grice was caught while applying for a seventh license."In his case, the system did the six hits and said, 'Wait a minute guys, you've got the same picture on six different driver's licenses,'" said BMV spokesman Dennis Rosebrough.Grice is now in jail in Fountain County.Miller announced at the meeting that the BMV is taking additional security steps including the creation of a fraud and security enforcement division within the agency.
