Two people were killed Thursday in a head-on collision in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 near Frankfort, state police said.

Troopers responded to the crash near the exit ramp to State Road 28 just after 4 p.m.

Investigators said a woman traveling southbound on I-65, for an unknown reason, drove through the median and struck a northbound car head-on, sending both vehicles into a guard rail.

The passenger in the soundbound car -- Richmond Flowers, 80, of Cincinnati -- was pronounced dead at the scene. His wife, Hazel Fields-Flowers, 83, who was driving at the time, was transported to Clarian Hospital in Lafayette, where she later died.

The driver of the northbound car -- Allison Waynick, 22, of California -- was also transported to Clarian Hospital, but her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

The northbound lanes of I-65 were closed in the area for two hours, reopening just after 6 p.m.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call the Indiana State Police at the Lafayette Post a 765-567-2125 and give their information to assist with the investigation.
