Auditor Charged With Stealing County Funds
Police: Woman Took Cut Of Repair Projects

GREENFIELD, Ind. -- The Hancock County auditor is accused of taking a cut of public money funneled into unapproved repair projects.Linda J. Grass, 42, of Greenfield, was arrested Wednesday after a two-month investigation by state police.The Hancock County Commissioners initiated the investigation after they said Grass submitted questionable claims for courthouse repairs that were never authorized between August and December 2008.
Investigators said Grass used county money to pay her cousin's company -- Barger Contracting -- $238,000 for the work. James Barger then deposited $54,000 of those funds into Grass' personal checking account.Grass was preliminarily charged with bribery, corrupt business influence, theft, conflict of interest and obstruction of justice.Police did not indicate whether Barger would be charged as well.Grass was being held Wednesday evening at the Hancock County Jail.
