One Last 'Extreme' Gift Delights Students

105 Neighborhood Students Given Free Laptops

The construction may be over, but the impact of "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" continues to be felt on Indianapolis' east side, where more than a hundred students took home a final gift from the show on Wednesday.

As part of the whirlwind revitalization of the Martindale-Brightwood neighborhood, trees were planted, abandoned homes were torn down and residents were given free access to wireless Internet.

But nearly a month after the show aired, some Indianapolis Public Schools students got what they said is the biggest gift of all -- free laptop computers.

It's part of a deal worked out between the lead builder on the project, Estridges Homes, and Dell, which supplied $45,000 worth of equipment, 6News' Renee Jameson reported.

The laptops were handed out Wednesday night to 105 IPS students who live in the neighborhood.

"I shall always keep it put up and somewhere where nobody can find it," one young girl told Jameson.

The children will get instruction on how to use and take care of their new computers. The hope is to have them integrated into classroom activities in the fall.

"They can go on from home and see classroom instruction and actually turn work in," said Darrell Morton Jr., a software trainer for IPS.

Sherrie Anderson said she hopes this will be another tool to help her young son succeed.

"He's 5, entering first grade and now he'll have the technology at home that he needs to advance himself," she said.

Dell also donated a software package to IPS that will help teach the children basic computer skills. Nearby Martin University will provide a free help desk for families who have questions about the computers over the summer.

The season finale episode of "Extreme Makeover" featured Bernard McFarland, a single dad of three sons, who runs a youth center in the neighborhood.
