INDIANAPOLIS -- Keeping children safe is not easy job, and it's not cheap, requiring supervision and the right equipment.A unique central Indiana store hopes to help new parents get prepared for what's to come and save money in the process, 6News' Julie Pursley reported.Expectant mother Genevieve Murray is about to move into a new home next week, and she's thinking about what she needs to buy to keep her new baby safe when he or she arrives in November."Safety gates, because I have two dogs, and monitors," she said. The Riley Hospital Safety Store is the first children's hospital-based retail store of its kind in the country. It opened in 2005, but the store is now larger and offers more options for parents who want to keep their children out of harm's way."Injury is the leading cause of death and significant long term disability for kids," said Dr. Jeffrey Sperring, of Riley. "We feel we are certainly experts at treating injuries, but the best way to treat it is to prevent it ever from happening in the first place."The store stocks a variety of items, ranging from outlet protectors and life jackets to child locators and cabinet locks. There are zones set up inside the store to simulate a home setting so customers can practice with some of the devices before buying them."We sell our items at cost in the Riley Safety Store," said Cara Fast, store manager. "We don't mark up items, so we can make them affordable for families and anyone who wants to shop here."Riley has other safety stores in the gift shop at the Children's Museum of Indianapolis and at hospitals in Greensburg, Martinsville, Tipton, Kokomo, Avon and Seymour.
