Kokomo, Elkhart Areas Share Undesirable Attribute

Two Indiana cities now lead the nation when it comes to growing unemployment.

The Kokomo area had the largest spike in unemployment in the U.S. during the month of May.

The jobless rate there jumped to 18.8 percent, up from 7.1 percent the same month last year.

The Elkhart-Goshen region saw an 11.4 percentage point increase, the second-largest in the nation.

The Kokomo area has been particularly hard hit by the dismal performance of the automotive industry, while the biggest hit in Elkhart came from a downturn in the RV industry.

El Centro, Calif., again posted the highest unemployment rate in the country -- 26.8 percent. Unemployment there is notoriously high because of many seasonal farm workers without jobs. Following behind were: Yuma, Ariz., with a jobless rate of 23.3 percent; and Kokomo at 18.8 percent.

The U.S. Department of Labor said jobless rates rose in all the largest U.S. metropolitan areas for the fifth straight month.
