Killer Of Former Mayor Sentenced Again

Van Orden Gets 50-Year Sentence

POSTED: 1:48 pm EDT July 2, 2009

A woman who was convicted of killing a former Evansville mayor has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for the stabbing of a state psychiatric hospital worker.

A Cass County judge gave Julie Van Orden, 65, the maximum sentence for her conviction on attempted murder charges.

Jurors last month found Van Orden guilty but mentally ill in the 2006 attack in which she stabbed Logansport State Hospital attendant Theodore Shriver 13 times.

Van Orden also was found guilty but insane in the 1980 shooting death of Russell Lloyd less than three months after he had left office as Evansville's mayor. His son, Russell Lloyd Jr., later also became mayor.

Van Orden was about to be released from prison in 2000 when a judge committed her to a mental hospital.

Investigators said Van Orden became upset after a verbal altercation with a female staff member, took out two knives and stabbed Shriver in the arm, face and upper torso.
