A man was fatally shot outside an apartment complex on Indianapolis' northeast side Friday night.

Indianapolis police were called to the Hearts Landing apartments, in the 9400 block of Stouffer Court, at about 10:30 p.m.

Officers found that Marquis Hawkins, 24, had been shot. Hawkins was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead just after 11 p.m.

Sgt. Jeff Duhamell said Hawkins had apparently been setting off fireworks with his girlfriend and left to buy more.

Witnesses said that when Hawkins returned, his girlfriend went out to check on him and found him lying on the ground suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Police said witnesses told them that a man was seen running from the area armed with a handgun.

Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
