INDIANAPOLIS -- As the confusion over property tax bills continues in Marion County, some frustrated homeowners are turning to companies for help appealing their assessments. The latest property tax bills in Marion County are due Thursday. That payment is to reconcile what should have been paid last year, but wasn't because of reassessment issues.County offices try to resolve an appeal with homeowners, but some homeowners choose to hire a lawyer or state-certified tax representative to help them through the process, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported. AppealTaxes-Now.com claims its analysis of a property's true value is more comprehensive than county officials'.Company owner Jeremy Miller said that in many cases, foreclosed properties and real home sales prices were not included in the original assessment, which led to the overvaluing of homes."We're in a system that needs to fixed still," he said. "The problem is that tax values are wrong, and if tax values are wrong, you're still overpaying."Jamie Gourley hired AppealTaxes-Now.com to straighten out the property tax bill on a home he renovated from top to bottom."(The property tax problem is) disheartening because, for me, I am confused," he said. "I know my neighbors are confused. It's overwhelming … when you try and go handle it yourself at the assessor's office."Marion County Assessor Greg Bowes said he believes recent changes have improved the assessment system, but admitted that it's not perfect."We cannot use a mass appraisal system like that and get 100 percent accuracy," he said. "We are going to have some parcels accessed incorrectly, and that is exactly why we have an appeals process built in."Miller, whose company charges about $100 to represent taxpayers on appeals, said he's confident his system can lower tax bills."If we can't do it, we will refund their money," he said.More Information: List Of State-Certified Tax Representatives AppealTaxes-Now.com
