Pit Bulls' Owner Gets 2 Years In Woman's Mauling

Dogs' Owners Given Maximum Sentence

The owner of two pit bulls that mauled a 68-year-old woman resulting in the partial amputation of one of her legs pleaded guilty and apologized in court Tuesday.

Lee Carroll, 32, was given the maximum sentence of two years on two misdemeanor counts of criminal dog bite liability, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

Brenda Hill appeared in court with her family on Tuesday. After seven surgeries, she lives in a nursing home and is still undergoing therapy after the Jan. 25 attack on her front porch.

"The last thing I remember I looked one of the pit bulls in the eye and they was trying to kill me. It looks like he was doing something to really hurt me," she said. "But I'm just happy to be alive."

Before his sentencing, Carroll apologized to Hill and told the judge that he had suffered too, that he couldn't eat or sleep after the attack.

Hill's son said it is nothing compared to what his wheelchair-bound mother has endured.

"I don't see how he suffered. Suffering is what my mom has been going through for the past six, seven, eight months. That's suffering," Greg Gilbert said. "What he's been going through is a little bit of guilt. Suffering? He hasn't suffered."

A spokesman for the Marion County Prosecutor's Office said the statute Carroll was tried on is weak, but that they were pleased with the sentence.

"The judge did everything she could with the statute that is set forth currently and that statute is a lot less than it should be," said Mario Massillamany.

A restitution hearing has been set for August, although the amount Hill will ask for hasn't been totaled.

The dogs were put down in February.
