2 IPS Buses Involved In Monday Crashes

Two Indianapolis Public School buses were involved in separate crashes Monday morning.In each case, the driver of another vehicle hit the back of the bus.
The second crash occurred at about 10:30 a.m. in the 1600 block of Madison Avenue and shut down traffic in both directions.Police said Sabrina Trotter, 44, the driver of an Indianapolis Public Schools bus, stopped on the road to take a cell phone call from her mother.Police said the driver of a Hummer, John Northrop, 54, was going northbound and was tuning his radio when he plowed into the back of the bus.Northrop suffered minor injuries. Police ticketed Trotter for an improper stop.The first crash occurred when a car plowed into the back of a bus on the city's north side at about 7 a.m.A passenger in the car suffered minor injuries. The car's driver, an 18-year-old man who told police he had never driven before, was not injured. Pictures from Skycam 6 showed that the front end of the car was lodged underneath the back of the bus.The crash occurred at 52nd Street and Keystone Avenue as the bus stopped at a railroad crossing.Police said the car's driver told them his brakes didn't work when he applied them. He was cited for driving without a license. Investigators said the driver and bus were both headed for Broad Ripple High School."Unfortunately, more and more we're seeing accidents involving unlicensed drivers or suspended drivers," said Indianapolis police Officer Anthony Priami. "We can only do so much."
