Two Muncie police officers were shot and a suspect was killed in a confrontation near the Ball State University campus Friday afternoon, police said.

Officers were serving a felony warrant near University Avenue and Dill Street about 2 p.m. when the suspect opened fire in the parking lot of a Village Pantry, police said.

"As (officers) pulled into the lot, the suspect, who had backed his Pontiac Bonneville into a parking space, began firing shots through his windshield into the windshield of the (police) Suburban," said state police Sgt. John Bowling.

Skycam 6 video of the scene showed two vehicles with dozens of bullet holes in each and bloodstains on the pavement.

Two officers were struck. Police returned fire, striking the suspect several times.

Officer Brent Brown, a 10-year veteran, was hit in the shoulder and his bulletproof vest stopped a round to his chest, police said.

Officer Steve Baugh was shot in the face. He was taken to Ball Memorial Hospital in stable condition.

The suspect was pronounced dead a short time later. He had not been identified Friday night.

"At no time was there a threat to the university community," Tony Proudfoot, Ball State spokeman, said in a statement.
