INDIANAPOLIS -- A former Indianapolis police officer who testified against his coworkers convicted of federal drug possession and conspiracy charges last month was sentenced Thursday.James Davis, 34, was given the minimum sentence of 10 years in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 kilograms of marijuana and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.Davis made a plea deal in return for his testimony against Robert Long, 35, and Jason Edwards, 38, who are awaiting sentencing.
The FBI tracked the three former officers as they used false search warrants or broke into homes to gain access to drugs and cash.Kabec Higgins, a civilian acquaintance of the men, was accused of distributing marijuana for the officers. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute 50 kilograms of marijuana and was sentenced to just more than a year in prison on Thursday.Long and Edwards could face anywhere between 20 to 35 years in prison. They were acquitted on firearms charges, which would have greatly increased their sentences.
