One year after Indianapolis police Officer Jason Fishburn was shot in the line of duty, the chief of police hailed his recovery as "miraculous."

Friday marked one year since Fishburn was shot in the head as he pursued a man under investigation in several murder cases.

In a department-wide e-mail, Indianapolis police Chief Michael Spears called Fishburn's progress remarkable, and asked that fellow officers continue to pray and offer support to Fishburn and his family.

"Let’s honor Jason through continued prayer and by performing our duties with courage that is born of loyalty, honor, integrity and a rededication to protect the citizens we serve with such pride," Spears said. "Jason’s injuries are a reminder of the hazards police officers encounter on a daily basis … Thank you again for your devotion to a life and career of care for and protection of others."

Fishburn returned to work on a limited basis last month, assisting at the police training academy.

"I'm very grateful and I'm glad to be back," he told reporters at the time. "Honor and duty … It's just a little different now. (I will) hopefully get to full function and get back to work."

Fishburn was shot twice -- once in the head and once in the chest, which was deflected by his bullet-proof vest. He is still undergoing rehabilitation for the injuries he suffered.
