COLUMBUS, Ind. -- Nearly 400 workers laid off from a Columbus factory return to work Monday, while hundreds more wait to learn their fates.Cummins Inc. had laid off 720 employees, but more than half have been called back to resume production at its MidRange Engine Plant, which produces engines for the diesel Dodge Ram, when Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy last week, 6News' Tanya Spencer reported."I believe that a lot of people thought that it would be longer than what it turned out to be, so I think it's really exciting that it turned out not to be so long," said Dolly Tatman, who was among those called back.
But the workers won't be back on the job for long. Cummins spokesman Mark Land said the plant will produce engines for the 2009 model Ram through mid-August, but would then be idled again until Chrysler starts building the truck's 2010 model. For those Cummins employees who weren't called back, it's a waiting game to see if they have a future with the company."We're just spending time with our kids during the summer and enjoying it the best we can," said Greg Louden.Land said that the workers called back Monday are expected to be called back again in October.
