MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The second of two convicted murderers who escaped from the Indiana State Prison has been spotted in a nearby southwestern Michigan town, police said.Grand Beach, Mich., Police Chief Dan Schroeder said the search is on for 46-year-old Mark Booher, who was seen with fellow escapee Charles Smith, 48, before Smith was captured Monday morning. Lance Battreal also escaped with the men.Schroeder said Booher was seen wearing a white shirt with blue shorts over gray sweat pants.
Police warned people in the area about eight miles from the Indiana prison to stay inside and lock their doors.Smith was captured about 7 a.m. by a private security guard for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley near the mayor's vacation house.Daley said he heard cars outside and "knew something was up," but said he thinks the men were lost, not targeting him.The three inmates were determined to be missing from the prison about 10 a.m. Sunday after they likely escaped by getting past the bars in the tunnels and pipe chases under the grounds, prison officials said.Smith, of New Castle, was sentenced in 1999 to 95 years for murder, while Booher, of Rockport, was sentenced the same year to 85 years for murder and robbery.Battreal, of New Castle, was sentenced in 1998 to 73 years for rape, criminal confinement and stalking for assaulting an Evansville girl while threatening her with a hammer.Anyone with information about their whereabouts should call 911.
