Man Saves Toddler From Drowning

Fire Chief: Bystander CPR Instrumental In Saving Boy's Life

A toddler's life was saved thanks to the quick thinking of a man with CPR training.

Robert Phelps, 2, fell into a pool in Centerton, just south of Mooresville, on Sunday, and Charles Spears stepped in to save the boy, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.

Spears didn't grant an on-camera interview to 6News, but said he just followed his instincts when he saw the boy in the pool.

When five Brooklyn volunteer firefighters arrived at the home on Mason Lane in Centerton, Spears was already attempting to revive the boy.

"When we got the scene, CPR was being performed by a bystander on a 2-year-old child on the deck of a pool," said Brooklyn Fire Chief Mike McCool.

Investigators said Phelps had fallen into the pool during a family gathering at the home and that the boy's parents had only turned their backs for a minute.

"It's again evidence that bystander CPR can make a difference," McCool said. "It's my understanding that the child left St. Francis' emergency room, did have a pulse and was attempting to take breaths on his own."

McCool said it's a critical help when someone knows CPR and can react quickly. He said his department could take up to 10 minutes to arrive at a scene. If CPR isn't performed immediately, the chance of survival drops significantly after about four minutes.

"Had it not been for the bystander's CPR, the outcome may have been different," he said.

The boy is recovering at Riley Hospital for Children. There was no word on his current condition.
