In a forgotten but defiant bayou community cut off from the rest of the world by a levee, a 6-year-old girl named Hushpuppy (Quvenzhane Wallis) exists on the brink of orphanhood, fighting often with her alcoholic father, Wink (Dwight Henry).

Hushpuppy and Wink wait out a strong storm, but as they try to rebuild with others, the salt water left behind begins to kill everything. Wink damages part of the levee and the water recedes, but rescue workers sweep in and take everyone to safety.
