CONNERSVILLE, Ind. -- A rally planned for next week could consummate the deal to lure Carbon Motors and 1,350 jobs to the struggling city of Connersville. The city, led by Mayor Leonard Urban, put on a show in May, with 7,000 people gathering to urge the company to pick Connersville for its high-tech police car plant. Now another rally has been planned for Wednesday, when 10,000 people, along with Carbon Motors executives and possibly Gov. Mitch Daniels, are expected to congregate on the site of a vacant factory, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.Officials won't say whether the event may actually be an announcement that Carbon Motors has decided to choose Connersville, but Urban is optimistic."We're not going to sit here and tell you that there's a chance we won't get it," Urban said. "We've had a belief from day one; we are going to do this."Residents are also hopeful Carbon Motors could be the answer to the city's unemployment woes."We're hopeful they do choose us. We're in desperate need of work here," said Emma Williams, who is unemployed.Fayette County has the sixth-highest unemployment rate in the state at 15.9 percent."It's so sad around here to know what our town was like before, and the potential is here. I think it could be that way again," said Kelly Isaacs, who has been out of work for two weeks.Urban would not divulge what incentives the city had offered the company, but said they are substantial."It was a very handsome financial package," he said. "For a community of this size to put that together was absolutely phenomenal."Carbon Motors officials said that the company already has 10,000 reservations for the high-tech police vehicle.
