MCCORDSVILLE, Ind. -- A 12-year-old McCordsville boy credited with saving the life of his 2-year-old brother said he's not a hero, just lucky.Matthew Clark, 2, wandered away from the family's home on Thursday. When his parents and brother went to look for him, they found the toddler floating face up in a nearby retention pond, 6News' Jennifer Carmack reported.Twelve-year-old Trey Clark jumped in and pulled Matthew from the water before calling police.
"My little brother, he fell into the lake. I think he might have drowned," Trey told a 911 operator.Paramedics stabilized the 2-year-old and took him to Riley Hospital For Children in Indianapolis. He was released the next day.Fire officials said it was an extremely close call."It could have had a very tragic ending. I think just a couple of more minutes in the water and we could have been talking about a much different situation," said Buck Creek Township Fire Department Assistant Chief Rudolph Nylund.Trey said he didn't think before jumping in the water."I was so scared. I thought I was going to lose my only little brother," he said. "Everyone says I'm a hero, but I think it was just luck, and a little bit of help from up there."The Clarks now keep their patio door locked, and are considering installing a fence around their yard to prevent Matthew from wandering away again.
