CONNERSVILLE, Ind. -- While no one is confirming that a rally planned for Wednesday will be victory celebration, it appears that the city of Connersville has secured a high-tech police car plant and its 1,350 jobs. The city, led by Mayor Leonard Urban, put on a show in May, with 7,000 people gathering to urge Carbon Motors to pick Connersville. On Wednesday, 10,000 people are expected to gather at the old Visteon plant in town, alongside Gov. Mitch Daniels and several Carbon Motors executives, 6News' Norman Cox reported.Sen. Evan Bayh and U.S. Rep. Mike Pence have both sent prerecorded messages for the rally, along with Sen. Dick Lugar, whose press secretary told Cox Tuesday, "I think you can expect a positive result."Urban wouldn't confirm the announcement, but said he is hopeful."I can tell you over the last week it's been up, it's been down … even since we planned the rally," he said. "But we're expecting that we'll hear good news."Residents are also optimistic Carbon Motors could be the answer to the city's unemployment woes. Fayette County has the sixth-highest unemployment rate in the state at 15.9 percent."I mean, we have just had such a rough time of it the last few years, and it would just lift the morale of the people they would just be elated. They're ready to work," said store owner Helen Greene.Carbon Motors officials told 6News Tuesday that Connersville is still a finalist for the plant, along with sites in South Carolina and Georgia.
