A man was charged Wednesday in the shootings of a toddler and two women at a wedding reception in Lawrence over the weekend.

Francisco Ponce, 21, faces two counts of aggravated battery, along with single counts of battery, resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license.

Yuridia Sosa, 2, was recovering from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. She was upgraded to fair condition Wednesday at Methodist Hospital. Sosa's mother, Mariela Rodriguez, was shot in the leg, and another woman was shot in the ankle.

Lawrence police said Francisco, Jose and Isaias Ponce crashed the Saturday wedding and got into an argument with one of its guests.

During the scuffle, Francisco Ponce opened fire, and about 100 guests hit the floor, hoping to avoid being shot, prosecutors said.

The Ponce brothers were arrested when two officers arrived at the scene and saw Francisco toss a gun under a car, police said.

Marion County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Mario Massillamany said Ponce was an illegal Mexican immigrant and that prosecutors would seek to have him deported after the case is concluded.
