Police Target Teens In Truancy Sweep

Burglaries Up On Northeast Side

The back-to-school season brings a new challenge for police as teens skip class to commit crimes.

Indianapolis police took part in a truancy sweep Wednesday on the city's northeast side, where burglaries have been a consistent problem, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Shortly after officers hit the streets, they responded to a call of two teens who had kicked in the back door of a home in the 1000 block of North Dearborn Street. Police said they stole electronics, but dropped them and ran when they saw officers.

6News cameras spotted the teens a short time later on the porch of a nearby abandoned home. Police surrounded the home and the teens were arrested at gunpoint.

Investigators said the teen -- 15 and 18 years old -- were arrested just last week in connection with a stolen vehicle, burglary and fleeing police.

"You see one (teen out committing daytime burglaries), that's too many. You'd like to see them all in school. Unfortunately, it doesn't always happen that way," one officer said.

Burglars have struck nearly 2,600 homes and businesses so far this year on the northeast side alone, an increase of nearly 20 percent over this time last year.

Some residents said they're overwhelmed.

"This happened a few weeks ago and now this has happened again. It's kind of ridiculous," one woman said.
