INDIANAPOLIS -- The hottest item in the Circle City appears to be yard signs supporting the U.S. troops fighting in Iraq.
Officials with the Indiana Republican Party held an event on Monument Circle Thursday selling signs that read "God Bless & Protect Our Troops," for $5 apiece.
People started showing up around 5:30 a.m., and all the signs were gone within a few hours, RTV6's Julie Pursley reported.
"I'm a veteran who was over there in Desert Storm. I seen it on the news and I just want to support the troops," William Young said.At times, officials had a hard time keeping up with all the people who showed up to buy signs. The line often stretched halfway around the circle and down Market Street, Pursley reported."We knew there would be a lot of support, but boy this is an incredible outpouring," event organizer Luke Messer said. "We're all getting hot and sweaty running around getting these yard signs out. It's been a lot of fun for a very serious cause."
One man bought 40 signs for his friends and family, Pursley reported."I'm going to spread it out across my yards so everyone can see we're supporting our troops," Charlie Jordan said after buying some signs.Officials said 5,000 signs were sold and that the proceeds will benefit the American Legion. The Indiana Republican Party hopes to have more signs available Friday, and will notify the media if another event is held.
