People have opened their hearts and their pocketbooks following a 6News report last week about the theft of a collection jar intended to pay for the funeral of a terminally ill child.

The theft of the collection jar from a Shell gas station on Indianapolis' east side was caught on surveillance camera.

The money was intended to help with funeral expenses for Lanny James, or L.J., a 6-month-old boy who doctors say will likely not survive another year after suffering a stroke before birth.

After the story gained national attention when it was linked from cnn.com, a Dallas resident who read the story on TheIndyChannel.com sent 6News a check for $200 intended to cover the money lost in the theft.

Tompkins said she has been contacted by numerous people who were touched by her story of resilience and resolve in the face of terrible tragedy.

"It's overwhelming and unexpected. I just wanted the woman caught," Tompkins said. "Then they put it on CNN and all over the Internet, and it's just overwhelming, the love and support our family has gotten from across the nation, and it even made it to Italy."

Tompkins said a local funeral home has also offered to pay for LJ's funeral expenses.

Police have good leads in the theft case thanks to the security video, but no arrests have been made.
