INDIANAPOLIS -- A donation jar filled with money intended to pay for the funeral of a terminally ill child has been stolen for a second time. The collection jar at a Shell gas station at New York Street and Sherman Drive was first taken last week, and then again Sunday night, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.Slideshow: Updated Surveillance ImagesBoth crimes were caught on camera -- the first carried out by a woman in her late 30s, tall and thin, with blond hair who took $200, while Sunday's theft involved a man wearing a powder blue cap and a striped shirt who took nearly $100, police said. The money was intended to help with funeral expenses for Lanny James, or L.J., a 6-month-old boy who doctors say will likely not survive another year after suffering a stroke before birth."I'm mad. Not only did he disrespect my son, he disrespected everyone who wanted to help him," said mother Margaret Tompkins.Police said they have good leads in the original theft case thanks to the security video, but no arrests have been made. Store employees said the man who swiped the jar on Sunday was not a regular customer."Somebody is trying to do a good thing, and somebody comes along and spoils it for them," said customer Mike Pickerd. "It's just upsetting for the family, and upsetting for the community."After the story gained national attention when it was linked from cnn.com, a Dallas resident who read the story on TheIndyChannel.com sent 6News a check for $200 intended to cover the money lost in the theft. The check was presented to Tompkins on Sunday.A local funeral home has also agreed to pay the burial expenses for L.J."I would never have imagined my little guy would be in so many hearts and prayers," Tompkins said. "I was just collecting change just to help out."
