Animal Control In Apparent Struggle To Keep Up

Director Mum On Board President's Firing, Agency's Issues

Indianapolis' Animal Care and Control Director Doug Rae wouldn't talk to 6News Thursday night about the firing of his board president or complaints 6News has received about the agency's response to complaints.

Misty Taylor said she's frustrated with Animal Care and Control after her 3-year-old Labrador retriever, Nick, was viciously attacked by a stray pit bull, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.

"I said, 'Look, we've been calling you. My neighbor's been calling you for almost three weeks now to come pick this dog up,'" Taylor said.

Taylor said the pit bull scaled a privacy fence twice to get to her dog, and Nick's surgeries have cost her $1,500 so far.

Taylor said the dangerous dog was still roaming her west-side neighborhood Thursday despite numerous calls to Animal Care and Control to come get it.

6News was able to find the dog pretty quickly, just a couple of blocks from where the attack occurred.

Taylor said she was told there was only one officer, at times, who was picking up strays.

"I said, 'You know what, I'm going to call 6News for help, because I don't know where else to turn,'" Taylor said. "I said, 'My dog's been attacked twice … and you guys will not come out here to get this dog. You keep telling me you're going to put runs in.' I said, 'What are you going to do when it attacks a child?'"

An officer did eventually come out, but wasn't able to catch the dog, Hightower reported.

Rae wasn't there when 6News went to the Animal Care and Control facility. He later told Hightower by phone that he wasn't doing any interviews.

The stray kennel at Animal Care and Control was filled to the brim Thursday. There were no empty cages, and some of them had more than one dog inside.

There were two officers at the facility. Taylor said she was told the city is hiring more, but that it takes time to train them.
