Progress has apparently been made in a decades-old case of a missing Hoosier girl.

The Lebanon Reporter told 6News that Boone County Prosecutor Todd Meyer confirmed that there are several people of interest in the disappearance of Shannon Sherrill 23 years ago Monday.

Sherrill was 6 when she vanished from her mother's mobile home in Thorntown while playing with friends outside on Oct. 5, 1986.

One of the people of interest is David Elliott Penton, who is already serving a life sentence in a Toledo, Ohio, prison for the murder of a 9-year-old girl in 1988.

"He was identified as a person of interest," said Rod Rose, of the Lebanon Reporter. "The prosecutor has said there are no suspects. At this point, nothing definitive has been revealed to show a crime has, in fact, been committed."

Police searched an area for possible evidence, but that search turned up nothing so far.

Sherrill's father, Mike Sherrill, told 6News in August that he still holds hope that his daughter will come home someday.

"You never forget. Somewhere out there I have a little girl," Sherrill said.
