Life Still Harsh For Some Along Hamilton Avenue

House Where 7 Killed Still Stands

Crime is still a daily battle for the residents of an east side neighborhood where seven family members were killed more than three years ago.

The trial started Monday for one of the men thought to have gunned down four adults and three children in a botched robbery attempt at 560 N. Hamilton Ave in June 2006.

A judge ruled last fall that the house where the killings happened must stand until the trials of both men are finished.

But neighbors said it's hard to move on with such a stark reminder of crime and violence.

"Until everybody that's here moves off this street," Evan Lewis told 6News' Renee Jameson. "(Until) that house is gone, the lingering effect -- everybody will still have it."

Crime is still a problem in the area, and there are a number of abandoned homes along Hamilton Avenue.

"We still see cars broke into, houses broke into. I mean, the lady on the street that I live, they broke into her house and beat her up, you know, kids," Lewis said.

But Brookside Neighborhood Association President Chip Gibson said the community has put forth a concerted effort to increase watches in neighborhoods.

"The awareness that the crimes brought to our neighborhood just reinforced the idea that, (by) working together, we can work on this issue -- not (be) just depending on the police," Gibson said.

Prosecutors allege the men charged in the slayings broke into the Hamilton Avenue home looking for a safe full of money and drugs. No such safe was found in the home.
