Junkyard Gets 'Green' Recognition

IDEM: Pull-A-Part Recognized As 'Indiana Clean Yard'

POSTED: 7:42 am EDT October 14, 2009

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management said an Indianapolis junkyard is the first in the state to receive its recognition for environmentally friendly practices.

The Pull-A-Part auto salvage yard is the first to be recognized as an "Indiana Clean Yard" since IDEM launched the program two years ago.

IDEM said it worked with an industry group to develop standards that junkyards must meet to earn the recognition.

"This is a great example of how we can work with a particular business sector and help them find ways to improve their process while protecting Hoosiers and our environment," said IDEM Commissioner Thomas Easterly, in a news release.

Junked vehicles can contain potential environmental hazards such as batteries, mercury switches, antifreeze and oil. IDEM said Indiana has more than 650 auto salvage yards.
