Disturbing Details Revealed In Swim Coach's Sex Arrest

Police: Hundreds Of Messages Exchanged Between Girl, Coach

A swim coach accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old girl at Lawrence North High School made a court appearance Thursday morning as disturbing details of the case against him emerged.

Christopher Wheat, 36, faces six counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and a single count of child solicitation.

Investigators said the girl, who had been coached by Wheat since she was 11, admitted having a relationship with Wheat in September.

The Marion County Prosecutor's Office said the girl's parents became suspicious of Wheat's involvement with their daughter and contacted police on Oct. 5.

Wheat, an assistant coach at the school and the owner of the Lawrence Swim Team -- a private club, and his attorney had no comment when he arrived for his initial hearing Thursday.

Court records indicated the girl told police that Wheat touched and fondled her in the coach's office and in a closet at the school.

Investigators said the girl's mother noticed a difference in her daughter's behavior and had confronted her.

"Then, she went and found some undeleted text messages from the swim coach that, of course, raised her suspicions," said Marion County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi.

Investigators seized Wheat's personal computers, other electronic devices, and his cell phone. They said he sent the girl hundreds of text messages.

A probable cause affidavit spells out some of the details of the text messages exchanged between the girl and Wheat, police said.

"Ur gonna end it soon aren't u," read one of the messages from Wheat to the girl, according to investigators. "Just hv a feeling ur gonna end it so u can b a normal hs kid."

Police said the girl responded with a text that read, "No im not…I don't want to. I want you my age so bad."

Another message purportedly from Wheat to the girl read, "Im the snuggle guy…luv to snuggle…windows open cold air blowing in and ur in my arms."

Wheat was suspended from both teams after charges were filed last week. Investigators are now trying to determine if he had inappropriate contact with additional children.

According to a probable cause affidavit, another girl, who is now 17, told police that Wheat made her uncomfortable by commenting on her looks and her body when she was 14 or 15 years old.

The girl told police that Wheat had told her he liked her better than other girls because "she was more developed."

Wheat's family said Thursday they have no comment.
