Some Health Care Workers Resist H1N1 Vaccine

Health Care Worker Offered Vaccine First

As Hoosiers line up to get the first injectable doses of the H1N1 vaccine, some health care workers are choosing not to be inoculated.

Thousands of hospital workers, EMTs and other personnel were vaccinated first in an effort to prevent a further outbreak at medical facilities, 6News' Stacia Matthews reported.

But hospital officials said some staff members cannot, or have chosen not to receive the vaccine for various reasons.

Some are allergic to eggs -- a key ingredient in how the vaccine is processed -- while others cited cultural and religious beliefs, or simply do not want to be vaccinated.

States like New York have made it mandatory for all health care workers to be vaccinated, but inoculation is voluntary in Indiana.

At Hendricks Regional Hospital, they expect to vaccinate 75 percent of the staff by the end of the week. Officials said those who are not inoculated must wear gloves, special masks and practice good hand hygiene.

"That is mandatory," said Dr. John Sparza, vice president of medical affairs. "Yesterday, we vaccinated 875 workers. By the end of the day (Thursday), we expect to have 1,200 employees immunized."

The hospital employs 1,600 people.
