Southport Mayor At Odds With Council

SOUTHPORT, Ind. -- The Southport City Council plans to call on Mayor Rob Thoman to resign at a Monday night meeting. The council said the request stems from questions about Thoman's 1981 arrest on theft and embezzlement charges in Colorado -- which Thoman said was dismissed.Councilors said that arrest was never disclosed to them, and court documents provided by the council indicated Thoman pleaded no contest to the charges. The council is also upset about what it said was Thoman's failure to produce city financial records that were requested in July."We've gotten two months out of 16 months we've requested," said council member Jim Cooney. The council is sending a letter to the county prosecutor, secretary of state and attorney general to try to find out if Thoman has done anything wrong criminally."We're going to ask for a fraud investigator to come in and look at our books," said Susan Schmoll, also a council member. The mayor and council, along with constituents, have been at odds since Thoman was elected in 2007 over various issues. Some residents in the community of 1,700 people in southern Marion County called for Thoman's resignation in July, after several police officers resigned.Thoman also stirred controversy when he eliminated prayer from council meetings."There's quite a few of us who want him to resign," said resident Thomas Bencze. "(We'd) like to see somebody else come in here and straighten things up."Council members have long felt that Thoman doesn't engage them, while he held that voters put him in office to enact change, and that's what he is doing.Thoman didn't immediately return 6News' calls for comment Monday afternoon.
