Indicted Officer: I Gave Police Everything They Needed

Officer Accused Of Giving False Information On Homicide Case

An Indianapolis police officer accused of keeping information from detectives in a homicide investigation said she gave police everything they needed to make an arrest.

Candi Perry, 47, was indicted by a Marion County grand jury on charges of official misconduct, a Class D felony, and false reporting, a Class A misdemeanor.

The indictment alleged that in late June, Perry knowingly provided false information to officers investigating the slaying of a west side man in the 3100 block of Rader St. after she was asked to come up with a possible suspect.

Perry on Thursday disputed the claims, telling 6News' Jack Rinehart that she, through information garnered from a witness, led detectives to the main suspect.

"Immediately upon receiving, probably within three minutes of receiving, all the information on who the suspect was, I called him (the lead lieutenant). I said, 'We have the suspect basically in sight. He's right around the corner. Do you want us to get some marked cars and ID this guy and find out who he is?' And the lieutenant said, 'Absolutely not,'" Perry said.

She said detectives were upset that she would not give them the name of the witness who led her to the suspect, who she described as someone who didn't trust police.

Perry's attorney, former Public Safety Director Robert Turner, called his client the victim of a smear campaign by police, who he said implied that Perry had a relationship with the witness and the suspect.

Perry appeared in court on Tuesday and has been suspended from her job and recommended for termination, pending a merit board vote. She was named "Community Policing Officer of the Year" in 2008.
