Police: Man Beat Woman, Stabbed Dog To Death

Woman Says Pit Bull Was Trying To Protect Her

A Lawrence man beat a woman and then killed her dog when it tried to defend her, police said.

Officers were called to 4529 Dunn St. in Lawrence Sunday after Marialina Renner, 48, said her roommate -- David Mendenhall, 54 -- attacked her and her pit bull, Delilah.

According to the police report, both Renner and Mendenhall had been drinking when they got into an argument, and Mendenhall punched Renner in the face.

That's when Renner said Delilah tried to protect her, biting Mendenhall on the hand. He then took the dog outside and killed it with a hunting knife, she said.

Police said they had responded to the same home in June when the dog bit Mendenhall before. Officers said Delilah was very friendly with officers at the time.

Mendenhall was arrested and preliminarily charged with torturing and killing an animal and battery.
