INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indianapolis food pantry struggling to meet increased need in the community was dealt another blow when thieves burglarized the building.Last week, someone broke into The Lord's Pantry at Anna's House in the Stringtown neighborhood, taking a digital camera, power tools and a laptop computer, 6News' Jennifer Carmack. With the cost of replacing the items and installing a security system, the nonprofit group is out about $9,000 just before the critical holiday season.
"This is just a horrible time for this to come, not that there's a good time. but we're going into the holidays," said Director Julie Molloy. The pantry, founded by the late Lucious Newsome, provides groceries every Saturday and hot meals every Wednesday.Since last year, the need in the neighborhood has gone up by 100 percent. But Molloy said the pantry will make ends meet."We can't turn our backs on the entire community because of one," she said. "One of the things Lucious always said was you will have to deal with some of the greedy to help the needy."The pantry is gearing up for Thanksgiving dinner, where they will provide a meal for 250 people. They are also looking for volunteers to adopt a family for Christmas. Those who would like to help are asked to visit the pantry's Web site.
