Man Crashed, Jumped From Ramp

A police chase ended Thursday with a crash at Indianapolis International Airport.

State police and Plainfield police were chasing a vehicle just after 3 p.m. when the driver -- Richard Stedman, 44, of Indianapolis -- drove up the ramp leading to the new terminal and lost control of his vehicle, crashing just before reaching the building, police said.

Stedman then got out of his vehicle and jumped from the ramp, falling about 40 feet, where he was apprehended.

He was seriously injured and was transported to Wishard Memorial Hospital.

Plainfield police said they pulled over Stedman's vehicle on U.S. 40 just east of downtown Plainfield on a seat belt violation, and asked Stedman and his passenger to get out after noticing what they said was suspicious behavior.

The passenger complied, but Stedman sped off, sparking the chase, police said. They believe Stedman fled because he was wanted in a burglary case. He now faces additional charges of resisting arrest.

Airport spokeswoman Susan Sullivan said no one was injured besides the driver, and no flights were delayed as a result of the crash.
