INDIANAPOLIS -- Radio One DJs took to the airwaves Friday to raise money for the Mozel Sanders Thanksgiving dinner, an effort that touches thousands of central Indiana residents each year. The fundraising kickoff, which lasts two days, has extra urgency because the need is projected to be higher than ever, 6News' Julie Pursley reported."It's a lot of pressure this year … Traditionally 25,000 to 30,000 people need to be fed," said WTLC's Tony Lamont. "We're estimating now between 40,000 and 45,000, so we really have to work hard."The event will provide at least 5,000 more free dinners than it did last year, and it will require more money to reach that goal.Numerous volunteers are taking part in the effort, manning phone banks."We want to help people. No one should go hungry on Thanksgiving," said Chet Maxey, of Frito-Lay. "Now it's grown into this big opportunity."Organizers hope to raise $70,000 from generous people and businesses in the community."We are all maybe one paycheck away from a situation where we need help," Lamont said. "When you give, you do receive. A lot of folks don't really realize it's the giving that makes you grow."Donations can be made by calling 317-927-1183 or dropping by the food court areas of Lafayette Square and Circle Centre malls on Friday and Saturday.Donations can also be dropped off at Atherton Hall on the Butler University campus.Mozel Sanders Foundation
