The family of an Indiana soldier said they were told Friday that their son was among 13 people killed in the shootings at Fort Hood.

The father of Staff Sgt. Justin M. DeCrow, 32, of Plymouth, told WSBT-TV in South Bend that representatives from the Army visited the family on Friday to tell them of DeCrow's death.

He said DeCrow had been stationed at Fort Hood for a couple of months, and that he been in the Army for 12 years. He leaves behind a wife and an 11-year-old daughter, his family told the TV station.

DeCrow was a 1996 graduate of Plymouth High School.

"We remember him in Plymouth as a kid who really loved working with his hands. He was in welding, he was in agriculture, car mechanics. He'd always come to class with his hands greasy," Dan Tyree, the superintendent of Plymouth Schools, told WSBT. "He got along with everyone and everybody liked him."

A soldier from Lafayette was also shot in the melee, but survived. At least 31 people were wounded and 13 people killed in the shooting.

Indiana Military Reaction

Soldiers at Camp Atterbury near Edinburgh said Friday they were shocked by the news of the Fort Hood shootings.

"(It's) really hard to take that another military individual would do that to other service members," said Capt. Gary Blagburn, who is in charge of military police at the base. "Obviously, we want to put our thoughts and prayers out to the family of those soldiers who were injured or killed yesterday,"

Lt. Col. Deedra Thombleson said security has not been boosted at Camp Atterbury because the violence appeared specific to Fort Hood.

Fort Hood is the largest active duty armored post in the United States. The base halfway between Austin and Waco was home to about 52,000 troops as of earlier this year.
