INDIANAPOLIS -- An Indiana lawmaker wants to outlaw texting behind the wheel for all Hoosier drivers.Senate Bill 18, proposed by Sen. Travis Holdman, R-Markle, would make texting while driving a Class C infraction, carrying a similar fine to that of a seat belt violation, 6News' Sarah Cornell reported.Holdman said he's fielded questions from constituents on the topic ever since the Legislature banned teenagers from texting and using cell phones while driving.
"Why are you stopping at 18? We need to prohibit everyone from using their cell phone when they are driving," he said.Still, not all drivers Cornell talked to said they'd be in favor of the ban."That is getting a little touchy. That's like saying people shouldn't eat or drink or do anything other than drive," said Matt Lothian, who said he does sometimes text and drive.Others said they know the practice is dangerous. Studies show that drivers who text while driving are nearly 25 percent more likely to get in an accident than those who don't."It was quick and easy, and I thought I was good at it. But then, you know, the more accidents that happen, I decided it's probably not the best thing," said Laura Hanson. "I try to discourage my friends from doing it."I have a hard enough time texting while I walk, so texting while I drive is a little too dangerous for me," Matt Everett said.Holdman said he will introduce the bill to the Legislature when the session starts in January. If it is passed, it would go into effect in July 2010.
