A community of family, friends and loyal customers are rallying around an Indianapolis man critically injured during a robbery on the city's east side.

Gabe Jordan, 33, told police that he was walking his dog on Clyde Avenue, near the 5000 block of English Avenue, at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday when two men robbed him, shooting him in the back as he tried to get away.

Jordan remained in the Intensive Care Unit at Wishard Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, and is expected to be paralyzed from the waist down, doctors said.

Still, family members told 6News' Jennifer Carmack that they're remaining positive.

"If you look at the sign outside of his door, it says no crying allowed," said Andrea Holom, Jordan's aunt. "They have a lot of support right now, but (his wife is) going to need it, they're going to need it in the long run."

Jordan has a 7-month-old son, and works as a wine steward at the Fall Creek Place shop Goose the Market.

Customers and the local business community are stepping up to help.

"We're trying to work on putting some fundraising dinners together to help raise money for the fund and for the family," said owner Chris Eley, who said they will also collect money at the store.

"I'm encouraging our clients to donate to Gabe," said Cindy Zoellner, the owner of nearby Salon Orange Moon. "We love them very, very much, and we feel so bad that this happened to such great people, and that were here for whatever they need"

A fund for the family will be set up through Chase Bank starting Thursday afternoon, and the family has also established a Web site where they will be updating his condition.

"Everybody knows him, everybody loves him," Holom said. "This should not have happened."

Police don't have a detailed description of the assailants, but said they got away with about $20. Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
