SHELBYVILLE, Ind. -- A former Shelbyville city councilman was arrested on a battery charge Thursday after being accused of pushing a boy against a tree.
Police said James Garrett Jr. (pictured, left) is accused of confronting a 12-year-old boy who was riding a skateboard Thursday morning near Garrett's Shelbyville home.
The boy told police that Garrett thought he was making too much noise with the skateboard. Garrett pushed him against a tree and held him there, the boy told police.
"He had a mark on his upper back and a bump on the back of his head where he was struck against the tree, and then of course the marks on the front that were consistent with being held by hand," Shelbyville police Capt. Mark Weidner said.
Garrett was released from the county's jail Thursday after posting bail.
Garrett had been an aide to Dan Coats when Coats was in the U.S. Senate. Garrett once lost a bid to become Shelbyville's mayor.
