Police Expect To Release More Info Monday

INDIANAPOLIS -- Relatives of a child found wandering alone Saturday stepped forward after seeing her on television.The 1-year-old girl was found carrying an ash tray in a candy shop near a street corner in the area of 21st and Harding streets at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday.Police released her picture and information Sunday evening in hopes that she could be identified.
Detectives are still trying to determine why the child was not reported missing. She remained in protective custody Monday morning."When the baby cries, the man picks the baby up and takes her inside the store right here," said witness Jimmie Cushingberry. "He went inside and said, 'Here's a baby,' so I got on my phone … and called police."Police weren't able to retrieve any fingerprints from the ashtray, but they unsuccessfully canvassed the neighborhood for hours looking for someone who knew the child, 6News' Rick Hightower reported.The girl stayed with two women inside the store until police arrived. Police said she had a messy diaper, but appeared to be in good health.Police expect to release additional information in their investigation later Monday.
